Lǔ Shèng 魯勝

(fl. 3rd century CE) Jìn scholar and commentator on the Mòjīng. His commentary on the Mohist canons is lost, but the surviving preface, Mòbiàn zhù xù, is one of the most important early sources for the interpretation of Mohist dialectics. It preserves the principle yǐn shuō jiù jīng (‘using the explanations to illuminate the canons’) and provides rare evidence concerning the organisation and interpretation of the Mòjīng before its modern rediscovery. For many centuries Lǔ Shèng’s preface remained one of the few surviving discussions of theMòjīngand therefore exercised a disproportionate influence on later attempts to understand the text.
