Liáng Qǐchāo 梁啟超

(1873–1929) Reformer, journalist, and historian of Chinese thought whose writings played a major role in the modern rediscovery of Mohism and the Mòjīng. Encouraged by Sūn Yíràng’s pioneering studies of the Mòzǐ and his 1896 letter Yǔ Liáng Zhuōrú lùn Mòzǐ shūLiáng was among the first twentieth-century scholars to investigate the Jīng and Jīngshuō chapters as a coherent textual system. In Mòjīng jiàoshì he made the influential observation that the ‘head’ characters of the Jīngshuō passages are systematically derived from the opening characters of their corresponding Jīng passages, providing an important tool for reconstructing the structure of the Mòjīng. His work helped shape subsequent studies of Mohist logic and textual organisation.
